Florida Growers Want Compensation for Tomato Scare

The Associated Press - Florida tomato growers want the federal government to compensate them for millions of dollars in lost revenue when a nationwide salmonella outbreak occurred and the government first focused on raw tomatoes.

Dr. Acheson of the FDA testified to a packed Hearing of the Energy and Commerce Committee that the FDA found Salmonella saintpaul, the salmonella outbreak strain that has sickened at least 1,307 people since April, on a Mexican farm.

FDA officials say they got a break in discovering the source of the outbreak, when they found a trace of salmonella on a single jalapeno pepper in a McClean, Texas warehouse, that was imported from Mexico.

Food Insecurity - 2008 Tomato Recall the Largest from Salmonella

The Associated Press is reporting today that "The official toll from salmonella-tainted tomatoes continues to rise: The government counted 756 confirmed illnesses Thursday.

That's roughly 200 more illnesses than health officials had counted a week ago, in what has become the nation's largest outbreak of salmonella from tomatoes.

The continuing rise in cases is due mostly to state laboratories finishing backlogs of tests, not lots of new infections, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. The latest known illness occurred June 13.

The outbreak's source remains a mystery."

Food Insecurity - National Tomato Recall

Another month and yet another food recall. Over the past few years high profile food recalls have seemingly become the norm. These national or regional recalls, whether it's beef, toys from china, spinach, tomatoes, or peanut butter, is a failure of our food and trade agencies. They have failed to do their job and these failures are catching up with us. The 'us' doesn't only include the consuming public, it also means the produce growers in this particular case because the Food and Drug Administration has not yet identified the source of the contamination. It has been several weeks since the start of the outbreak and with no source identified, hundreds of millions of dollars worth of tomatoes have gone to rot because they can't be sold or unharvested or destroyed by tomato growers. Lost revenues often means lost jobs.
